CareNow Alumni Takes on Disability Engineering
One of our passionate and enthusiastic carers, Sebastian Williams, demonstrates the commitment to the special needs community outside of work which we encourage. Currently studying a degree in Psychology at Monash University, Seb has been working with engineering students from The University of Melbourne since September 2019 to develop an assistive tablet technology that enables individuals with special needs to regain independence in the shower. One of the major difficulties that Seb encountered while working at CareNow was assisting in showering, with fidgeting and distractedness being two primary causes for these struggles. The assistive tablet technology that Seb is developing will allow individuals to regulate temperature and flow in the shower, incorporating features such as: Voice command, daily planning, entertainment widgets, pre-set temperature and flow, upper and lower temperature limits.
Having conducted initial prototyping without any external funding or help, Seb is now applying for a range of funding for the next stages of prototyping and bringing the tablet to life to help the community as soon as possible. This includes a $100,000 grant offered by AMP’s Tomorrow Fund, supporting amazing Australians doing great things. Sebastian is definitely amazing and doing great things to support the special needs community beyond his role at CareNow. We wish him all the best and will continue to support him in his ventures.
